A typical solar energy system includes solar panels, inverter, equipment to mount panels on to the roof and a performance monitoring system to track the electricity production. The solar panel does the job of collecting the solar energy and turns that to electricity, which is passed through the inverter that converts it to the form used at your home. When the solar system is producing electricity more than your requirement, the excess is fed to the power grid that is connected to your solar energy system. The power grid supplies you with electricity if the panel is producing insufficient electricity vice-versa.
